Police kill gunman in Alabama hospital

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - Police shot and killed a gunman at an Alabama hospital early on Saturday after he wounded an officer and two hospital employees, authorities said.

When police arrived at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham and approached the suspect, he opened fire, said Sergeant Johnny Williams, spokesman for the Birmingham Police Department.

One officer returned fire and killed the suspect, he said. None of the wounded had life-threatening injuries, and they were transported to another hospital for treatment, according to Williams.

The incident began around 4 a.m. when a hospital employee on the fifth floor spotted a man with a gun and called police, Williams said.

Police have not yet confirmed the man's identity, he added.

South Korea: NKorea's satellite orbiting normally

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? A satellite North Korea launched aboard a long-range rocket is orbiting normally, South Korea said Thursday, following a defiant liftoff that drew a wave of international condemnation.

Washington and its allies are pushing for punishment over the launch they say is nothing but a test of banned ballistic missile technology.

The launch of the three-stage rocket ? similar in design to a model capable of carrying a nuclear-tipped warhead as far as California ? raises the stakes in the international standoff over North Korea's expanding atomic arsenal. As Pyongyang refines its technology, its next step may be conducting its third nuclear test, experts warn.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said the satellite launched by the rocket is orbiting normally at a speed of 7.6 kilometers (4.7 miles) per second, though it's not known what mission it is performing. North Korean space officials say the satellite would be used to study crops and weather patterns.

Defense Ministry Spokesman Kim Min-seok said it usually takes about two weeks to determine whether a satellite works succesfully after liftoff. He cited data from the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command also said "initial indications are that the missile deployed an object that appeared to achieve orbit."

The U.N. Security Council, which has punished North Korea repeatedly for developing its nuclear program, condemned North Korea's action and said it will urgently consider "an appropriate response." The White House called the launch a "highly provocative act that threatens regional security," and even the North's most important ally, China, expressed regret.

In Pyongyang, however, pride over the scientific advancement outweighed the fear of greater international isolation and punishment. North Koreans clinked beer mugs and danced in the streets to celebrate.

"It's really good news," North Korean citizen Jon Il Gwang told The Associated Press as he and scores of other Pyongyang residents poured into the streets after a Wednesday noon announcement to celebrate the launch by dancing in the snow. "It clearly testifies that our country has the capability to enter into space."

In Seoul, about 100 people held a rally to protest the launch, and burned a stuffed doll of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and a mock missile made of paper.

The rocket launch was North Korea's fifth bid since 1998. An April launch failed in the first of three stages, raising doubts among outside observers whether North Korea could fix what was wrong in eight months, but those doubts were erased Wednesday.

The Unha rocket, Korean for "galaxy," blasted off from a launch pad northwest of Pyongyang just three days after North Korea indicated that technical problems might delay the launch.

South Korean navy ships found what appears to be debris from the first stage rocket at Yellow Sea and were trying to retrieve them on Thursday, defense officials said. The debris is believed to be a fuel container of the first stage rocket.

The officials said South Korea has no plans to return it to North Korea because the launch violated U.N. council resolutions.

The launch could leave Pyongyang even more isolated and cut off from much-needed aid and trade.

The U.N. imposed two rounds of sanctions following nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009 and ordered the North not to conduct any launches using ballistic missile technology. Pyongyang maintains its right to develop a civilian space program, saying the satellite will send back crucial scientific data.

Pyongyang is thought to have a handful of rudimentary nuclear bombs, but experts believe the North lacks the ability to make a warhead small enough to mount on a missile that could threaten the United States.

Airline Loyalty Frequent Flyer Programs a ?Mega ... - Kobie Marketing

As a marketing director, ?mega,? is a word I could usually do without. Too often it comes part of the package deal with any campaign that trumps volume over substance. We have mega department stores, mega sales, mega bucks, mega discounts, or my favorite pairing, ?mega colossal.?

Thankfully, though, last month?s Mega Event in San Diego delivered. Several airline frequent flyer programs broke new ground in how they inspired passenger loyalty, heightened revenue and made payments domestically and abroad easier to manage.

The ?Golden Age? of air travel gets a lift

Virgin America, with its playful-yet-eye-grabbing presentation title: The 5-year-old Virgin ? How Virgin America is Breathing New Life into Loyalty, was one to watch. This past summer Virgin announced an upgrade to its existing frequent flyer loyalty program, Elevate, where two new loyalty tiers, Elevate Gold and Elevate Silver, offer even greater benefits to elite travelers.

That may sound run of the mill, but it isn?t. Virgin?s program succeeds where other FFPs fail, breaking beyond the points-for-miles accumulation stereotype. Added to the mix are service offerings that improve the flying experience itself, like priority check-in, security clearance and boarding, free checked bag allowances, digital/social rewards, and an expanded purchase window for an eight-seat first-class section and complimentary best seats in the main cabin.

Many have written that the so-called golden age of flying was never that golden. Nevertheless, flying decades ago was an exclusive experience that carried with it a measure of distinction and elegance. Virgin America?s FFP upgrades are a nod to that type of specialized travel and are an ideal way to promote loyalty.

?Shop Like a Local? loyal to world travel

Air New Zealand was also a favorite as Nick Judd, head of the airline?s Loyalty Products and Relations division, began his talk with a video, promoting the airline?s new OneSmart Card, narrated by Kiwi television personality Phil Keoghan. Like Virgin, OneSmart Card allows for speedy domestic check-in. But the card also acts like an ATM/debit card, has no transaction fees, and offers users the opportunity to convert up to four foreign currencies and lock in exchange rates before travel.

While a lot of non-trade press likes to have a field day with ancillary revenues, fee-bashing, and the so-called nickel and diming of passengers?, their ridicule fails to appreciate two important facts: Fee-based ancillary revenues, e.g., baggage charges, food, drink and pillow expenses, headphones, etc. are only a portion of the ancillary mix. Vital for airline profit? Yes. But not the whole picture. And surveys like PwC?s 2012 Experience Radar repeatedly show that service-based ancillaries, like the ones interwoven in the two loyalty examples above are a preferred way to give passengers a better experience. In other words, paying for premium perks shouldn?t be seen as gimmicky ad-ons, but rather a creative attempt to curtail critical revenue shortfalls across the airline industry while giving passengers a better, more efficient travel experience.

This recognition shouldn?t come as a mega shock, but it?s something more people beyond travelers, Mega Event attendees, and airlines need to appreciate. Like other verticals, be it retail or hospitality seeking a loyalty program component, driving quality experience and engagement is the key in helping marketing substance trump marketing volume.

Heinicke, Breitenstein lead AP FCS All-Americans

NEW YORK (AP) ? Payton Award finalists Taylor Heinicke, the record-setting quarterback from Old Dominion, and running backs Eric Breitenstein from Wofford and Miguel Maysonet from Stony Brook were selected to The Associated Press FCS All-America team released Wednesday.

Heinicke had the most prolific passing season in the history of what used to be called Division I-AA football. The sophomore from Georgia passed for 5,076 yards and had 5,546 yards of total offense, breaking records set by the late Steve McNair when he was at Alcorn State in 1994.

"What Taylor did this year from an individual standpoint is nothing short of incredible," ODU coach Bobby Wilder said Wednesday.

"We build our system around our quarterback and what we feel like are his strengths. To run an offense that suits their needs. As (Heinicke) has gotten comfortable in our system, we've become more of a throwing team because of his comfort level."

The Walter Payton Award goes to the top player in FCS and will be handed out Dec. 17.

Directing the Monarchs' fast-paced spread, Heinicke also set FCS records for completions (398) and total plays (705). And Heinicke ran for 470 yards and 11 touchdowns.

"He understands our philosophy is to find a way to move the chains," Wilder said. "If you need to run the ball, you run it to get a critical first down and those first downs lead to touchdowns. Protect the ball and find a way to move the chains."

Heinicke did just that in September against New Hampshire when he passed for a Division I record 730 yards in a 64-61 victory. He threw 79 passes in that game without an interception.

Old Dominion finished 11-2 record, losing last week to Georgia Southern, 49-35, in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

Breitenstein made his second straight appearance as a first-team All-American. The 230-pound senior fullback ran for 2,035 yards and 19 touchdowns this season.

Maysonet ran for 1,964 and 21 touchdowns for the Seawolves.

Murray State quarterback Casey Brockman was picked to the second-team. Colgate quarterback Gavin McCarney made the third team.

Eastern Illinois' Erik Lora and Elon's Aaron Mellette, ranked 1-2 in the nation in catches and yards receiving, were the receivers and Harvard's Kyle Juszczyk was the tight end.

A couple of guys who will be playing in this weekend's FCS semifinals highlight the offensive line.

Bill Turner and North Dakota State host Georgia Southern on Friday night and Will Post and Eastern Washington host Sam Houston State on Saturday.

The other linemen were Earl Watford from James Madison, Mike Sellers from The Citadel and Roger Gaines from Tennessee State.

The defense is led by Georgia Southern's 300-pound defensive tackle Brent Russell and Georgetown linebacker Robert McCabe, who leads the nation with 14.45 tackles per game.

Brandon Thurmond of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the nation's leader with 17? sacks, joined Russell on the line along with Colton Underwood of Illinois State.

Montana State placed two players on the defense. End Caleb Schreibeis leads FCS with eight forced fumbles and linebacker Cody Owens was the Big Sky defensive player of the year.

New Hampshire linebacker Matt Evans, who was a second-team All-American last year, made the first team this year.

Defensive back Marcus Williams of North Dakota State joined Breitenstein as a two-time All-American and became the only defensive player to repeat this season.

North Dakota State and Montana State were the only teams to place two players on the first team.

The other defensive backs were Darnell Taylor of Sam Houston State, Jaquiski Tartt of Samford and Cooper Taylor of Richmond.

Walter Powell of Murray State was the all-purpose player. He had 1,213 yards receiving and more than 900 yards returning kicks and punts.

Patrick Murray of Fordham was the kicker and Sam Martin of Appalachian State was the punter.

My wife and I have been together almost 30 years and a month ago she told me that she didn't want to be married anymore (it was the old "I still love you but I'm not in love with you and it's not you, it's me). She said that we had grown apart and that she couldn't see spending the rest of her life with me.

A week later she admitted to having an affair that had been ongoing for six months (he lived in another city but they both traveled on business and would meet up in different cities to spend nights together). I happened to see her phone one day and found a 40 message text thread. They claimed to love each other and were definitely sexually involved. He found out that I found out who he was when I Googled him and read his profile on LinkedIn (at which time he ended the relationship with my wife because he didn't want his wife to find out). My wife was pissed at me because I looked at her phone and that he ended their affair so abruptly. She also said that the affair had nothing to do with why she wanted to end our marriage (I think perhaps it emboldened her to want to move on and enjoy life as a single woman).

We went for couples' counseling and in our second session, my wife also admitted to a one night stand several years ago (but claimed that it didn't mean anything as it was only a one night stand). When the therapist asked if she had any other intimate relationships with other guys, my wife said that she had lots of opportunities, but only did it with these two guys.

We just separated a week ago and are trying to figure things out (my wife has said that she's not sure if moving on is the right thing and that she may be making the biggest mistake of her life). I hate her for what she's done to me (and to our family) and that she could be so uncaring for our relationship as to sleep with two other guys (one of whom she was sleeping with for six months and claimed to love).

The problem is that I still love her more than life itself and think that I may be able to get past what she's done because we have almost 30 years invested in our relationship. I think I can forgive her but know that I will never forget what she did.

HOW CAN I EVER TRUST HER AGAIN. My wife has always been a very selfish person. It's always been about her, and what she wants. Even if we get past all of this and reconcile, how do I ever trust her again. If she's working late in the city, traveling on business, or has a dinner meeting - how do I know that she hasn't slipped into another affair or is screwing some random guy? I am the jealous type and this is driving me crazy. She now tells me that she is sorry that she told me the truth about her affair and her one night stand (apparently lying came easy to her).

No matter how good things are with her in the future, I will always have that nagging doubt in my mind. She tells me that she had the affair because she was filling a void. She's a narcissist and needs constant adoration by others (she has told me so many times over the years how many guys have hit on her because she is so beautiful and successful). I worry that no matter what I do to make her happy, that some guy will smile at her, tell her wonderful things, and they will end up in bed together. I think it will drive me crazy for the rest of my life.

Should I move on? Is it possible to ever trust her again? The logical side of me says end the relationship and find someone who will be much more of a giver (my wife has always been a taker). The romantic side of me says I've loved her for 30 years and even though I know it's crazy, I can't stop.

I need advice as I'm really on the fence.

We have been living in separate bedrooms for the past three weeks and she just moved to her own apartment last weekend. I won't rat the other guy out to his wife as she's done nothing wrong (and it's not my place to make her miserable). There are other issues with the two of them but as long as it's over (and I'm sure it is) - it's no longer an issue.

I agree that my wife checked out a long time ago (she said that this has been a long time in coming) and that she must have so little respect for me to be able to easily do this with the long term affair partner (after she admitted the affair to me but before I found out the details, she would text him right in front of me and when I'd complain and tell her that she needed to end the affair , she'd tell me not to push her to make a choice as I wouldn't like the choice that she would make).

I know I allowed myself to be a doormat for her but love makes you do funny things.

Expos to other man's wife.

If you want her to respect you, you need to expose, and you think you 'don't want to make her miserable' thats a lie.

You just don't want to have to take action, but please don't tell yourself and try to spin it like your silence is doing that woman any favors or anything.

Her marriage is most likely crap, just that she doesn't know the exact reason WHY it is.

You need to expose. Puts your wife in her place, helps OMW, and gains you respect.

If you want to hide their affair then all you are doing is assisting them as their accomplice.

I got pretty much the same thing, your marriage is over

A week later she admitted to having an affair that had been ongoing for six months (he lived in another city but they both traveled on business and would meet up in different cities to spend nights together). I happened to see her phone one day and found a 40 message text thread. They claimed to love each other and were definitely sexually involved. My wife was pissed at me because I looked at her phone and that he ended their affair so abruptly. She also said that the affair had nothing to do with why she wanted to end our marriage (I think perhaps it emboldened her to want to move on and enjoy life as a single woman).

Tell his wife anyway, fvck him up. Nobody gets to fvck your wife and get away with it. TELL EVERYONE, family friends, etc., embarrass the sh!t out of her. Do it now so you can say you were very upset at the time instead of trickling. Maybe she will wake up, but doubtful.

It is what she admits to, there could very well be more, but who knows.

The biggest mistake was already made. Now release your anger, file for divorce. If she isn't falling all over herself RIGHT NOW trying to make things right, she ain't gonna make things right. You are setting yourself up to be her plan B. Maybe forcing her hand will wake her the fvck up, but I doubt it will.

The problem is that I still love her more than life itself and think that I may be able to get past what she's done because we have almost 30 years invested in our relationship. I think I can forgive her but know that I will never forget what she did.

Same with me, but there is such a thing as tough love. Release her to see if she comes back.

Good luck with that one, I can't. Tell her you have demands if she wants to R. If she baulks at any of them, it's time for you to D. You have to force HER hand. She will show you immediately. My wife wanted me to work for her. Someone who wants back in will work for you.

I assume you are at least 50 years old. It was easier for me because I am younger. Starting over sucks, but with the internet, a little working out and new clothes, you will be up to your eyeballs in poon in no time. Chicks are digging me already and I am not even divorced yet. The same will hold true for you as long as you aren't a pu$$y about it.

Should I move on? Is it possible to ever trust her again? The logical side of me says end the relationship and find someone who will be much more of a giver (my wife has always been a taker). The romantic side of me says I've loved her for 30 years and even though I know it's crazy, I can't stop.

I can't make the decision for you, but it sure looks like you will have your work cut out for you. File for divorce out of the blue. Tell her she has hurt you deeply and if she wants to truly work on us, she will have months to do so. The marriage is not over until the papers are signed. Stop telling her you love her, no pet names either, no affection. Do the 180, it works for you and could bring her back, but don't count on it.

I need advice as I'm really on the fence.

Get off the fence and make her work for you now, or just sh!tcan it all. She will show her true intentions eventually. Remember this, a 50 year old woman cheater has a much worse chance on her own that a man like you. You will be swimming in chicks and she will be cast aside. Just wear a condom. The largest growing STD population is in your age group.

TELL THE OM's WIFE NOW. Do it or you will regret it later. I will put money down that the affair will start again, at least she thinks it will.

The OM obviously doesn't want her to know, he will probably try to save his marriage like you are, and really kick your wife to the curb. They are lying in wait right now. Even if he does leave his wife for her, you aren't losing anything but a cheating spouse. She will cheat on him too.

STOP BEING A DOORMAT. Grown some nuts, NOW!!!! I know it is tough, but everyone here sees exactly what is going on. You see through your own clouded lovey eyes.

It has happened a million times before and will a million times more. All of these people here know what they are doing. File now, so you can be rid of her sooner and cruise for chicks. OR, get her back on board sooner.

P.S. When you expose and she gets mad at you for telling his wife, you know she is gone and is playing you.

You say you don't want to make his wife miserable. So, you let it go, let him live a lie, ready to hop in the sack with some other woman. You have no idea what this man has been exposed to in the past. You really have no idea if your wife has told the entire truth about how many other men she has slept with. She could have picked something up and passed it to you or even to the OM without knowing it. Or, the OM could have done the same thing to your wife or his wife. The OMW needs to be aware of what a POS her husband is. And it's very possible she DOES know, and just doesn't have the PROOF because he was deleting everything. She deserves to know what she's married to.

As Kasler pointed out, it's about respect. What the OMW does with the information is up to her, but you need to tell her, if for no other reason than that she can get tested for STDs, which he could very well have brought home to her.

Tell the woman. Personally, I'd be LIVID if someone knew my husband was cheating and didn't say anything to me because they felt "it isn't my place to tell." That's a cop out.

P.S. When you expose and she gets mad at you for telling his wife, you know she is gone and is playing you.

Awesome post!

HbtW,

Similar story here... at 30 years marriage, find out my wife has been serially cheating for the last 6+ years of marriage, the last was her new "soul mate" and was planning to leave for Fantasy Island el pronto.

A major concern you have... Trust. In truth, you will never fully trust your wife again regardless of R or D. That being said, you can still have a relationship. If you R, you get to join us in the "Trust and Verify Brigade." Just the way it is.

Memories... Honest, you will never forget. Her betrayal is now apart of your marriage. Whether you can live with it (the 800 pounder in the corner)... only time knows. In 6 months to a year or two you will be given your answer. There just no crystal ball when it comes to R.

Lastly, stop with the "Man Law" bs and expose the OM today. I sense you somewhat worry/concern that it will make your wife mad and she will react. Do you understand... you need to know exactly her reaction to this exposure. It will give you an idea of the "Trust" that you wonder about. Regardless, would you wanted to be in the dark if the roles were reversed.

10 Cars Past Their Expiration Dates

By the late 1990s, Lotus's flagship (and only) sports car, the V-8-powered Esprit, was nearing retirement age. Lotus wanted to return to its roots: producing lightweight, tossable, and undeniably fun-to-drive cars. The result was the feathery (less than 2000 pounds) and relatively inexpensive Elise. America didn't get the Elise until 2005, and it came packing a Toyota 1.8-liter four-cylinder and an incredibly rewarding driving experience.

The Elise has been a huge hit for Lotus?one that lives on even after it was supposedly going to end production in 2011. And the excellent chassis was so adaptable that Tesla used it as the basis for its first car, the Roadster. But now, late in 2012, the Elise goes back more than 15 years. With the more modern, powerful, and roomier (but no less fun-to-drive) Evora now in the Lotus stable, the Elise could certainly use a full remodel.
